​- June 2018   Volkswagen plans to build a new five-passenger SUV in Chattanooga.

According to a person briefed on details, the company will invest $340 million to bring the vehicle to market. The person revealed this information on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting an official announcement Monday in Chattanooga, where Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America Inc. are expected to attend.

The German carmaker describes the vehicle as a variant of the seven-passenger Atlas, designed and engineered for the American market. The Chattanooga plant also manufactures the Passat and the Atlas.

​Volkswagen of America today reported a 5.7 jump in June sales with the new Tiguan sport utility vehicle and all-new Jetta compact sedan helping to push the figures higher.


For the first half of 2018, VW sales are 7.2 percent above the same period last year, according to the German automaker.

June sales totaled 28,941 units, with the Tiguan SUV accounting for 7,788 vehicles sold, the company reported.

Jetta sales totaled 7,239. The new 2019 Jetta accounted for 5,168 units, VW said.

Sales of the Chattanooga-built Atlas SUV totaled 3,699 vehicles in the month, up 53.3 percent from a year ago.

The Passat midsize sedan, also made in Chattanooga, posted sales of 3,793 in June, down 28 percent from the same month last year.

"The first half of 2018 has been encouraging," said Derrick Hatami, executive vice president of sales, marketing and after sales for Volkswagen of America. "We have experienced a sales increase each month this year—and in June, we were particularly encouraged by the first full month of sales of the all-new 2019 Jetta, marking our best month of Jetta sales this year."

- June 2015    ​​Gestamp along for VW's expansion ride in N. America Plant will add jobs, chassis components 


In its determination to expand in North America, Volkswagen AG is pulling a key supplier along with it.
Gestamp Automocion announced plans last week to expand its stamping plant in Chattanooga to produce body panels, hot-stamped steel parts and chassis components for Volkswagen's new midsize SUV, which will enter production in 2016.
Gestamp's $180 million expansion will add 510 jobs and triple production in Chattanooga. It also will give Gestamp a new North American product line -- chassis components -- to supplement its production of body panels and hot-stamped parts.
Chattanooga "will serve as a beachhead for the introduction of chassis products in North America," said Jeff Wilson, chief of Gestamp's North American operations.

 - July 2015   VW makes 500,000th Passat in Chattanooga    

Volkswagen Chattanooga said today it has achieved a significant production milestone with the completion of its 500,000th Passat.

The car, produced in the world's first and only LEED Platinum certified factory in Chattanooga, was a Candy White Limited Edition, with black interior, keyless access with pushbutton start, a rearview camera, heated seats, a 170 horsepower, 1.8 liter turbo engine, premium radio and 17 inch alloy 'Sonoma' wheels.

"Our Passat has raised the bar on what Americans can expect from a mid-size sedan and the 500,000th car was built with the same passion for detail as the first," Christian Koch, President and CEO of Volkswagen Chattanooga, said in a statement. "I'm proud of our team and excited about new products on the horizon in this factory."

Volkswagen Chattanooga is currently undertaking a $900 million expansion to add a second model to the Chattanooga line. The expansion will add 2,000 jobs, the North American Engineering and Planning Center and will produce a 7-seat, midsize SUV.
